What does ASO mean and why does it matter?

App Store Optimization (ASO), also known as App Store Marketing or Mobile App SEO, is the process of optimizing a mobile app to be more visible and more downloaded in the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). In short, it's SEO for apps: you optimize the title, description, keywords, icon, screenshots and reviews so the app ranks higher in search, and you tune the listing so more of the people who see it convert into installs. An app becomes more visible the higher it ranks across a wide range of search terms, the higher it sits in the top charts, or when it gets featured on the store.

Why does it matter so much? Because there are billions of smartphone users and millions of apps across the major stores, and the numbers climb every year, creating a huge market for building and downloading apps. For most companies the question is no longer whether to invest in an app to reach their audience, but how people will discover that app in the first place, among millions of alternatives, and solving that discovery problem is exactly what ASO is for. Search is by far the most common way people discover new apps. Roughly 70% of mobile users use in-store search to find new apps, and about 65% of all downloads happen directly after a search. That's why ASO isn't only about ranking, it's also about click-through rate (CTR). Once someone finds your listing, you still have to convince them to actually tap into it.

The two major aspects of ASO are:

  • Keyword optimization and discoverability: researching, analysing and selecting the right keywords to place in the app's title, subtitle, keyword field and long description, and everything else that lifts organic impressions.

  • Conversion rate optimization: the systematic process of adjusting the textual and visual elements of the product page so a higher percentage of users download the app after seeing it.

To see why both matter, it helps to understand where impressions actually come from. Discoverability breaks down into two kinds of organic impressions:

  • Search impressions: according to Business of Apps, around 65–70% of installs come from users searching the store.

  • Browse impressions: roughly 15–20% of installs come from browsing (charts, categories, editorial surfaces). Crucially, an app that isn't ranked in any chart gets essentially no browse installs at all.

  • Paid: for apps that run heavy user-acquisition campaigns, paid installs can reach up to 50% of the total.

Search and browse together make up the vast majority of organic installs, so growing both is central to sustainable growth.

These two pillars work closely together. A solid keyword-optimization strategy produces higher rankings, while strong conversion-rate optimization ensures that the extra visibility actually turns into downloads. Neither delivers on its own.

The honest truth is that ASO is key to your mobile business. Without a real strategy it's very hard to get the results you expect, in ranking or in discoverability, unless you happen to be Facebook, TikTok or another app of that scale. ASO is what lets you win more organic downloads and spend less on paid ones, and it should be planned and executed hand in hand with your user-acquisition (UA) strategy for the best results. It's also constantly evolving: the stores change their algorithms and their layouts regularly, so ASO is a long-term investment that's never truly "finished." Kept up consistently, it can transform the results you get from your app.

How did ASO appear and evolve?

On 10 July 2008, Apple released the iOS App Store with around 500 initial apps. The catalogue grew exponentially, and by 2021 there were roughly 2.2 million apps on the App Store, and today the number runs into the millions. Google Play (then called Android Market) followed only a few months later, launching on 22 October 2008, and has since become the store with the largest catalogue of all.

Both marketplaces created a brand-new business model and attracted millions of developers. Much like the birth of search engines in the late 1990s and early 2000s, competition quickly turned fierce. To earn an install, developers first had to help users find their app among a myriad of options, and then hope they'd actually choose to download it. That double challenge is what gave birth to ASO, as an effort to increase both app discoverability and app conversions.

Around 2009, shortly after the stores began to grow, early adopters started spreading the term ASO. The first era was almost entirely about keywords, in the most simplistic way, borrowing directly from the SEO of the time. In practice, the whole ASO process could be summed up in two steps:

  • Add keywords to your app title.

  • Fill in your app keyword field.

Because competition was still thin and only a handful of developers used any ASO tactics at all, even the smallest optimization could noticeably improve your ranking.

Beyond keywords, developers and publishers soon realised that getting featured was a key driver of performance and visibility. It was enormous: according to mobile-growth and Apple Search Ads expert Thomas Petit, a week-long feature in the early 2010s could result in around 3 million installs. And because store algorithms were still underdeveloped, "black-hat ASO" was on the rise. Many companies bought cheap incentivized traffic (for example, users paid to install a game) to climb the ranks, inflate visibility and, in turn, harvest more organic traffic.

Over the following years, both stores introduced changes that turned ASO into an established discipline every serious developer has to tackle consciously. The major developments were:

  • Pay to play. With both stores offering paid placements, you could acquire users natively inside the store.

  • A holistic view of ASO, mapped to the ways users actually find and install apps:

    • Search: success today means an organic keyword strategy amplified by paid search.

    • Browse: improving browse performance is a partnership between the paid UA strategy and metadata improvements, plus a strategy to earn featuring in the right placements.

    • Referral: analysing the audience segments arriving from different channels and figuring out the most effective messaging and creative for each, to maximise the number of quality users.

This holistic view pushed conversion rate optimization (improving conversion across all those acquisition channels) to the centre of ASO. As the landscape grew more crowded and keywords became a far weaker source of competitive edge, only those who can successfully optimize their conversion rates climb the ranks, acquire users for less than the competition, and grow faster.

The pace of change has stayed high. At the World Wide Developer Conference in June 2021, Apple unveiled its most important release of the year, iOS 15, with features that reshaped ASO: A/B testing for creatives in the App Store, Custom Product Pages and in-app events. Around the same time, Google announced important metadata policy changes effective 29 September 2021, aimed at improving app quality and discoverability for Android developers on Google Play. It's widely believed that Apple may have revolutionised ASO with Custom Product Pages (separate store pages tailored to individual audiences), and only time will tell whether they mark a genuinely new era.

What's the difference between ASO and SEO?

If you're only now discovering ASO, it may be a more familiar approach to your online marketing than you expect. As mentioned, the early phase of ASO closely mirrored SEO, and even though the practice has evolved, plenty of overlaps remain. Many traditional search-engine tactics that work for Google or Bing apply directly to ASO:

  • App name, title and URL optimization

  • Keyword research for ASO

  • App rating and review generation and handling

  • Deep linking within mobile apps

  • Indexation of apps in Google search results (SERPs)

  • Click-through rate (CTR) optimization

That overlap isn't a coincidence. An app store is, in effect, a closed site-search engine: it relies on easy content (app) discovery and indexation, while its ranking algorithms are tied to perceived app quality, freshness, brand scale and user-value signals such as reviews, ratings and engagement, all of which are important organic ranking signals on the web too.

But because the stores and the web are two different ecosystems, there are important differences:

  • Search intent. Queries in the stores are generally shorter than on the web. People tend to search for a specific app by brand name, or for a new app that meets an exact need. On the web, people often seek answers to questions or research a product or service, so queries tend to be longer.

  • Keywords. In the stores, keyword optimization is limited to the title, subtitle and keyword field (or long description). App marketers therefore have to select a careful handful of relevant keywords. On the web, by contrast, you can optimize many different pages for many different queries.

  • Backlinks vs app downloads. Search engines rely on the quantity and quality of backlinks to judge a site's authority. Stores rely on download velocity to assess authority. The more downloads an app receives over a period of time, the higher its ranking chances.

  • Page speed vs uninstall/retention rate. Both search engines and stores want to give users the best experience. Search engines prioritise fast-loading pages; stores instead feed their algorithms with user metrics such as uninstall rate and retention rate.

  • CRO. On Google, click-through and conversion lean heavily on text elements. In the App Store and Google Play those text elements are only one part of the picture, and they're far less impactful than the visual ones, such as screenshots and videos.

There are a few known factors that influence optimization for iOS and Android apps, and it helps to organise them into two groups:

  • On-metadata factors: the elements developers or marketers can edit directly from App Store Connect and Google Play Console. These include: URL / package, developer name (Google Play only), app name / title, description, short description, subtitle, promotional text and keyword field (Apple only), category, icon, screenshots and video.

  • Off-metadata factors: as with off-page factors in SEO, these are external and not directly under the developer's control: volume and speed of installs, ratings and reviews, and (probably) user engagement.

Put simply: ASO = on-metadata + off-metadata.

Google and the web are a much more open ecosystem than the stores, where many external factors affect SEO success (backlinks, page-load speed, the value provided on a page, and more). The stores are far more isolated systems, which paradoxically makes success harder: there are fewer factors in your control and the competitive landscape is flatter. That's exactly why success in ASO will always come down to eliciting better user engagement on your page and driving better conversion rates.

How does Google Play differ from the App Store?

ASO is primarily focused on the world's two leading platforms: the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). Both operate the same way from the end user's perspective and serve the same purpose (letting users search for and install apps), but each runs its own system (its own search algorithm, if you think like an SEO) that you have to optimize for separately. Certain factors are a priority in one store and largely irrelevant in the other, so if you want your app in both, as most developers do, you need to understand and respect those differences.

In the past few years Google Play has been catching up to Apple: auto-playing videos, a more prominent screenshot gallery, a cleaner listing design. With the iOS 15 changes, it's reasonable to expect Google to keep evolving the Play Store in response. The most notable differences today:

  • Keyword-searching algorithm. The requirements for efficient keyword optimization differ between the two. Both consider the developer name and the app title, but the app description text does not impact Apple's algorithm, while Google considers it.

  • Indexing. Google Play's indexing works much like Google Search: it considers all textual elements, and you'll typically want to repeat keywords 3–5 times across fields to rank for them. The App Store instead provides a dedicated keyword field, and in some cases even pulls terms from your competitors and category name, and unlike Google Play, you should not repeat keywords across fields for iOS.

  • Search-results display. Apple cuts app titles to about 18 of the 30 allowed characters, and users see 3 portrait screenshots (or 1 landscape). In Google Play, results are dynamic: Google cuts the title length based on device, and screenshots don't appear for generic keyword searches. Keep this in mind when you design titles and creatives.

  • App-page listing / video. Google allows a single preview video, while Apple lets you have three 30-second videos, which of course affects how much you can communicate.

  • Audience. Apple and Google users behave differently. Apple owners are generally more willing to pay for apps and make download decisions more slowly, and they tend to review all your screenshots and information. Android users lean more on feature graphics, app ratings and quick signals.

  • App updates. Android developers can submit changes easily. Apple contributors need approval from the app-review team.

  • Review process. Both stores review apps to keep quality high, but Apple's process tends to take longer than Google's, so always build in a ~3-day buffer when releasing a new app or update. Once approved, an app goes live in the App Store or Google Play within 24 hours.

  • Screenshots visibility. In the App Store, screenshots display normally, but since iOS 15 they no longer show to users who have already downloaded the app. In Google Play, screenshots only show for branded searches.

Every element of your product page has the capacity to drive downloads, so it's essential to follow each store's best practices rather than copy one listing into the other.

Beyond the duopoly: Microsoft, Huawei, Amazon, Samsung

While Apple and Google dominate downloads and spend, several other big players run app stores with varying success and relevance, and they matter more than their size suggests when your audience overlaps with their devices.

Microsoft Store. Microsoft has moved to welcome more third-party app stores into the Windows 11 portal. Under the new policies, Amazon's Appstore and the Epic Games Store have announced they'll join in the following months. If Microsoft also manages to attract Steam, it could boost the profile of the Windows 11 store and reinforce Windows' dominance in PC gaming. You might still install Steam and Epic apps, but without juggling a whole bevy of separate launchers and clients just to find a favourite title.

Huawei AppGallery. Huawei is rapidly building AppGallery into an open gateway to thousands of popular apps worldwide. It's now the third-largest app marketplace in the world, available in more than 170 countries. Because of the US trade ban, newer Huawei devices (Mate 30 series onward) ship without Google Play, so users rely on AppGallery instead. Its design differs sharply from Google Play. Huawei invests heavily in editorial suggestions and discovery, highlighting games and popular apps by region. The whole layout is built around browsing rather than searching, which has driven a massive rise in developer registrations, particularly for games.

Amazon Appstore. The Amazon Appstore offers roughly 460,000 Android apps to worldwide audiences and stands out for one reason: it's the only way to promote apps for Kindle Fire devices. Kindle Fire tablets run on Android and adapting an app for them is easier than it seems, giving them the potential to grow a new audience. Having its own store for its own device line puts Amazon on a similar footing to Apple. (For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy store only offers apps for its own devices and competes directly with Google Play.)

Samsung Galaxy Store. Marketed as Galaxy Store (formerly Samsung Apps / Galaxy Apps), it launched in September 2009 and is used across Samsung devices. It's a premium, boutique-style store built specifically for Galaxy users, focused on curated app experiences, promotions, campaigns, rewards and exclusive offers, where users organically discover games and differentiated apps from Samsung and third parties. Why pay attention to it? Because Galaxy Store is pre-installed by default on every Samsung phone, and Samsung is the #1 Android brand globally, with close to a billion active Samsung smartphones and more than a quarter (about 26%) of the worldwide smartphone market.

There's also China, where Android ships without Google Play and Apple periodically removes apps and games at the government's request. That vacuum has spawned a fragmented ecosystem of local stores (Tencent's MyApp, Huawei AppGallery, the OPPO software store and others) that together account for roughly 75% of all app downloads in the country. Even though these alternative stores individually have low app and user counts, developers need to weigh them whenever their target markets include those device bases.

How do you optimize keywords for the app stores?

Market research, paired with keyword research and optimization, is the first step when implementing an ASO strategy. Knowing your niche, who your competitors are and what tactics they use is essential to learning how to out-rank them and win more downloads.

Keyword optimization starts from data: market research plus keyword research by search volume, difficulty and traffic/download potential. For new apps in particular, fighting for top rankings on popular head terms is extremely hard, so the best strategy is choosing the right keywords rather than the biggest ones. Start with mid- and long-tail keywords, which combine into more specific searches. Around 70% of search queries are long-tail, and they convert better, because a specific search means a higher probability the user finds exactly what they were looking for.

Choose your terms based on volume, difficulty and their ability to generate organic traffic and downloads, and make sure core keywords appear across all the textual fields. It helps to sort them into three categories:

  • Core business keywords: terms worth ranking for because of business reasons.

  • Competitor keywords: terms the competition already uses, which are worth contesting.

  • Brand keywords: terms related to your own brand.

Then distribute them thoughtfully across each text element.

a) App title / name

Google Play. Together with your icon, the title is the most visible element in Google Play search results. Unlike the App Store, the subtitle and screenshots don't appear in Google Play search. It also carries the highest weight in the Google Play algorithm. Choose a name that's unique and describes what the app does, and where relevant add an emoji to catch attention and lift install rates.

App Store. The app name carries the most weight in Apple's algorithm, so use the space for your most important keywords and place them at the very beginning if possible. Pick a name that's memorable and consistent with your brand, and avoid names that are too generic or widely used by competitors. The iOS name limit is 30 characters.

b) Short description / subtitle

Google Play. The short description doesn't appear in Google Play search results, but it's visible on the listing right below the screenshots. Its main purpose is to boost conversion, but keywords here also give a ranking boost, so use them wisely and include your most important terms where possible.

App Store. The subtitle appears underneath the app name (in both search results and on the page) and should summarise what your app does. Use it to highlight features and purpose, and always include strong keywords to improve visibility. Don't repeat keywords already used in the app name. Repetition adds no extra weight. Like the name, the subtitle limit is 30 characters.

c) Keyword field (App Store)

The keyword field helps Apple decide when to display your app in search, and it's invisible to users. Think about the specific terms people use when browsing, and look for keywords with high search volume but low competition. Use single keywords rather than combinations (the iOS algorithm combines terms automatically to form long-tail keywords), and use singular words, since in most cases you'll then also rank for the plural. Separate each keyword with commas and no spaces. Don't repeat keywords from your app name, subtitle or publisher name; don't add the category name; and skip words like "app" and "free," which Apple matches automatically. Anything repeated is simply a waste of characters.

d) Promotional text (App Store)

Promotional text is not a ranking factor. Keywords here won't rank your app. But it's a unique chance to get people excited by highlighting promotions, upcoming features and other time-sensitive content. It appears above the long description on the page and is the only field you can edit without resubmitting the app for review. The limit is 170 characters.

e) Long description / app description

Google Play. In contrast to the App Store, the long description plays a big role in visibility, and its keywords do rank. Use the 4,000 characters to explain what the app does, its main features and why it's valuable, and make the first lines count, since they appear before the "more" button. Maintain a healthy keyword density (2–3%) for your main terms, avoid keyword stuffing, and try to include the most important keywords in the first ~5 sentences, which carry the most weight. You can include mentions, awards or genuine reviews, but avoid unattributed or anonymous testimonials. That's a bad practice that goes against Google's policy. Keep the layout simple: short paragraphs, bullet points for features and benefits, and emojis plus font formatting (B, I, U) to highlight key benefits. If you want to add emojis, you can copy them from Getemoji.com or Graphemica; because emojis and formatting render differently in the Play Store app versus play.google.com, Phiture publishes a handy rich-formatting cheat sheet for each of Google Play's text assets.

App Store. In contrast to Google Play, the description is currently not a ranking factor. Keywords in the 4,000-character description won't help you rank. But it plays a major role in conversion: people who scroll down and tap to read it are genuinely interested. Write an enticing first paragraph (the first 3 lines and a "more" button appear immediately under your screenshots), and use the space to highlight features and functionality, how people benefit from downloading, and any mentions, awards or nice reviews.

f) App updates / "What's new"

The top-performing apps are those that keep evolving, reflecting user feedback, technology changes, feature additions and improvements. Updating at regular intervals keeps your product relevant and lets your brand react to changing needs and competition. Both stores factor update regularity into their ranking algorithms, so the more committed you are to progressing your app, the better your likely ranking and in-store performance. When you release a new version, use the "What's new" text to communicate the changes, but note it only shows to people who have already downloaded the app, so it doesn't drive conversion; use it to showcase new features and meaningful improvements to existing users. Keywords in "What's new" don't affect rankings.

g) Developer / seller name

Google Play. The developer name is far more visible here than on Apple. It appears underneath the title in Google Play search results. Leveraging your brand name as the developer name lifts conversion, because small developers using a personal account are trusted less than a brand. It's also been found that keywords in the developer name rank, so it's another opportunity for visibility. Optimizing the developer page (feature graphic, short description, page icon and featured apps) can even earn free cross-promotional downloads and greater credibility.

App Store. The seller name appears under the app title but shows only for a few seconds before being replaced by the subtitle. Even so, keywords in the seller name can rank, giving you another chance to gain visibility on your main terms.

h) Google tags (Google Play)

Tags may affect where your app appears in Google Play and which peer groups you're compared against. In short, they help Google cluster similar apps so it can surface relevant content while users browse. Updating them can move impressions and downloads from "explore," so choose carefully and pick only the tags that are most obviously relevant to your app's content and functionality. Developers can add tags manually in the Play Console, and Google will also auto-assign some.

How do you optimize visuals and conversion rate?

The visual elements are what ultimately decide whether a user installs, so at Data Revolt we treat every one of them as a hypothesis to A/B test rather than a set-and-forget asset.

Before the individual elements, one thing worth knowing about Google Play specifically: because Google has deep search expertise, its store weighs your downstream metrics heavily. App quality, measured through crashes and "app not responding" (ANR) events, significantly affects discoverability in search and the charts, and retention plays an important role too. Google Play also runs a more sophisticated personalization engine than Apple, which means you have less direct control over your browse impressions, and the factors that decide whether you're promoted are varied and largely unknown. From Google's own comments, we know the way to earn that exposure is a good product (with strong downstream metrics), great reviews and ratings, and a high-converting listing.

a) App icon

The icon is the only graphic asset that shows in Google Play search results, which makes it even more important than an iOS icon. Choose an icon that differentiates you from the competition and grabs attention fast: use borders, shadows and gradients for contrast, a high-resolution image, and the right size for each device. You can test several icons (for example with Google Experiments) to find the option that converts best with your audience.

b) Screenshots

Google Play. Screenshots don't show in search results and sit below the fold on the listing, but they're still vital for showing what the app does and how it looks on a device. Show just one feature or benefit per screenshot (you can also design panoramic screenshots that tell a story and encourage scrolling), and add a short caption at the top of each so people understand quickly. Use all 8 screenshot slots for each supported device type, including landscape for tablets. A/B test creatives, texts, colours and portrait-vs-landscape, and localize for each language.

App Store. Screenshots are one of the most important elements for your install rate on Apple, because they appear in search results and are among the first things users see on the page. With portrait screenshots, create a panoramic experience by visually connecting the first 3, which show in search under your title and subtitle. If you add landscape screenshots, only the first will show in search. Use all 10 slots, keep captions short with a large font, include screenshots for each device, A/B test them, and localize for each language.

c) Promo video / preview

Google Play. The app promo video is the first visual element on the listing. It used to occupy the top banner (replacing the feature graphic); since a Google update it now sits just before your screenshots. These are actually videos you upload to YouTube, so design them in standard 16:9 (landscape). Google allows more creative freedom than Apple: showcase your main features and benefits, end with a clear call to action to download, and design for no sound. Keep it 30–40 seconds, and don't monetize it on YouTube (no ads), or Google Play won't accept it on your listing.

App Store. Preview videos are a major CRO tactic on the App Store. They aim to increase engagement and autoplay on mute directly in search results. You can add up to 3 app previews, which appear before the screenshots and play one after another. Show the real user experience and the journey users will have in the app. Keep videos simple, 15–30 seconds, focused on one feature each, design poster frames/thumbnails, create separate videos per device, and A/B test. If you design portrait videos, the first preview appears in search alongside your first two screenshots; landscape videos appear in search on their own.

d) Feature graphic (Google Play)

The feature graphic appears as the poster frame when your app has a promo video. A play button overlays it, and clicking swaps the image for the video. It also appears (instead of your icon) when your app is featured on the Play Store. Create an image with the same look and feel as your promo video, immediately recognisable to anyone familiar with your brand. Avoid using it to cram in extra screenshots; focus on reinforcing your brand and app benefits, and A/B test it.

e) In-app purchases

Individual in-app purchases (IAPs) are a real lever for both keyword and conversion optimization, because they can surface directly in search results, an opportunity to rank for keywords beyond your title, subtitle and keyword field. Optimize each IAP's name, description and icon with the same care as the rest of your listing.

  • Google Play: promote up to 10 IAPs; text limit 55 characters, description limit 200 characters.

  • App Store: up to 20 IAPs; IAP name limit 30 characters, description limit 45 characters.
