This means that an increasing number of businesses, especially ecommerce websites, choose Shopify to set up their online store in a fast and efficient manner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Another great thing about Shopify is that it has its own App Store for almost any feature that you would need for your website. The not so great thing about Shopify is that it lacks customization options in comparison to other similar services and most useful apps will increase your monthly budget by a bit, but most of its downfalls can be countered by a good and reliable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/partners\/blog\/115244038-an-overview-of-liquid-shopifys-templating-language\">Liquid<\/a> developer.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s dig into our topic of interest: <strong>Data <\/strong>collection.<\/p>\n<p>There are two main ways to send <strong>data <\/strong>from Shopify websites to Google Analytics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The easy way<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Our way<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s dig a little deeper into each solution.<\/p>\n<h3>The easy way<\/h3>\n<p>Being that Shopify is such a great platform, it allows you to just paste your Google Analytics tracking code into the admin settings, by navigating to Online Store &gt; Preferences &gt; Google Analytics section. After saving this change, an additional option appears right under the Google Analytics tracking code, which allows you to easily implement Enhanced Ecommerce with a literal push of a button (don\u2019t forget to save your changes &#8211; so two buttons actually).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/oFsaodEVZiRH3ovmLUnIh-rAKICUc7mBI4aloNbEPiEQw9ryOz9kBO_9Zszd91GXs8syLlQxShfOPyM8JRrc5qn3n3z9lX85zw5RzytobJO0y3-0yPaM0iKj5gWOVjod8Tin3h_s\" \/>The caveat is that you will be limited to basic <strong>data <\/strong>collection, without having the option to add additional custom dimensions or custom metrics to your implementation. If you need more information about <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.datarevolt.agency\/product-dimension\/\">dimensions and metrics<\/a>, feel free to browse through another cool article that we wrote for you.<\/p>\n<p>Also, you won\u2019t be able to send custom events or user data to Google Analytics, which will limit your insights considerably.<\/p>\n<h3>Our way<\/h3>\n<p>If you had the opportunity to work with us, you would know that we don\u2019t like to keep things simple, although we love to show off <strong>data <\/strong>in a seamless manner.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s check out <strong>our way<\/strong> of collecting data from Shopify websites.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, make sure that you have admin privileges in Shopify. You can access the admin section by simply adding \u201c\/admin\u201d after your website\u2019s homepage URL, for example \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/datarevolt.agency\/ro\/admin\/\">https:\/\/datarevolt.agency\/admin<\/a>\u201d. Also, you will need to create a Google Tag Manager account if you don\u2019t already have one by following <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-platform\/tag-manager\/web\">Google&#8217;s instructions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll need to edit the code of your currently published theme, by following the three steps shown below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/BH9nNfsri-d5eUAlrRDcdhCAU57E6g1RHpe1YFdCh-nb90zgFR-IpwzEyO-PIIPHiQRvLYuHX7aRkrHzVdgasFuEUSUd7UL30fkGkxL9gHnRcGBo8j1F8F6D5irTC2-zIZYd3sBM\" \/>Then, you will be presented with all Liquid files of your website\u2019s theme, but we\u2019ll focus on <em>theme.liquid<\/em>, which contains the underlying code of almost all of your website\u2019s pages. This means that any code present in the <em>theme.liquid <\/em>file will run sitewide. At least that\u2019s what we expected at first, but we soon discovered that Shopify has some security features in place for the checkout and purchase pages, which means that the <em>checkout.liquid<\/em> file is unavailable for clients using the standard Shopify plan, which most small businesses would use. But we\u2019ll get back to that in a second.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified the <em>theme.liquid <\/em>file in the <em>Layout<\/em> section of the code editor, you can follow Google\u2019s tutorial on <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/tag-platform\/tag-manager\/web\">how to install Google Tag Manager<\/a> on your website, but we\u2019ll make it easier for you:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>After you\u2019ve set up Google Tag Manager, click on the Google Tag Manager ID;<\/li>\n<li>Copy the <em><strong>script<\/strong><\/em> section as high as possible in the <em><strong>&lt;head&gt;<\/strong> <\/em>section of your <em>theme.liquid <\/em>file in Shopify;<\/li>\n<li>Copy the <em><strong>noscript<\/strong><\/em> section as high as possible in the <em><strong>&lt;body&gt;<\/strong><\/em> section of your <em>theme.liquid <\/em>file in Shopify and <em>save<\/em> your changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Z2bWoPxBSov19dhXkUTunwx-yeIlu15yP-3iKpLoOgtwNXHY8oTEcdBumosd4AFm-T7yLZMtacJzO6HNtLTQh5ISUDzEjvdcniTcK0vv-O07JSDUVb_12Vh1EZGSuXJXoT6R8P2s\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/B7oXUE2eukc8cEd5TmzTO8z7oL4lJ4FVPjy02VVQBNU0_o_QgtRUyrdKyLujezDvtV6i5xjqVoVw4-tdt4rRdDrfWDyqrBBKw4hECuCElKR41UnM_QWLthzUoQsspFLjqOmN_u_6\" \/>Now it\u2019s time to bypass Shopify\u2019s restrictions and install Google Tag Manager on the <em>thank-you<\/em> page, also called the <em>purchase <\/em>page. The main reason behind this is to track the most important event from any Enhanced Ecommerce implementation, which is the <em>transaction <\/em>event.<\/p>\n<p>In order to do this, you\u2019ll need to navigate to Shopify admin <em>Settings <\/em>&gt; <em>Checkout <\/em>&gt; Scroll down to <em>Additional scripts<\/em> and paste both the Google Tag Manager <em><strong>script <\/strong><\/em>and <em><strong>noscript<\/strong><\/em> sections, in that order.<\/p>\n<p>The only caveat is that you will not have Google Tag Manager installed on the <em>checkout <\/em>pages, which implies that the Google Analytics Checkout funnel report will be missing some steps, but we recommend that you set the <em>cart<\/em> page as the first and only checkout step in your Enhanced Ecommerce implementation.<\/p>\n<p>In order to make this implementation useful, let\u2019s start with adding a <em>pageview <\/em>event into Google Tag Manager that triggers on all pages.
